Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago presents “Cultural Bridges…The Pearl Primus Project”. This concert showcases the company’s stunning range as it presents historic premieres and classics from its repertoire which draws on the strength and beauty of traditional African and contemporary African American dance.
“Cultural Bridges…The Pearl Primus Project”, will feature two Company Premieres, “A Negro Speaks of Rivers” and “Hard Time Blues”, both signature works by Dr. Pearl Primus. “A Negro Speaks of Rivers” was originally choreographed by Dr. Primus in 1944 and premiered by her company in 1945. The work includes text from the Langston Hughes’ poem “A Negro Speaks of Rivers”. “Hard Time Blues” premiered in 1945 and is based on a song about sharecroppers by folksinger Josh White. Muntu Dance Theatre will be the first African dance company to receive and perform Dr. Primus’ works. Muntu has been awarded an American Masterpieces Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of this project.
“Cultural Bridges…The Pearl Primus Project”, will also feature “Legend: A Tribute to Michael Jackson” showcasing new choreography by Amansu Eason, a principal dancer with Muntu. Also included will be a Guinean Medley, including the celebratory and invigorating dances of Yankadi/Kassa/Macru as well as the pulsating, dynamic drums and musicianship of the Muntu Drum Orchestra.

‘An Evening of Pearls.’ begins at 4:00 p.m. with a film retrospective on Dr. Primus’ work. A panel discussion follows moderated by Amina Dickerson. The panel will explore the relevance of Dr. Primus’ work within a social justice framework with current examples of art-making that embraces the concepts inherent in Dr. Primus’ work. The evening will end with a catered reception. Admission is free to the public.

elementary and high school students
The curriculum will explore the life and relevance of Dr. Primus, with a focus on the historical, social and political context of her works. With the guidance and instruction of Muntu’s teaching artists, students will learn ‘Fanga,’ a dance first introduced to America by Dr. Primus when she traveled to LiberIa, West Africa in 1959 and worked with the National Dance Company. ‘Fanga,’ is an interpretation of traditional Liberian invocation to the earth and sky. A study guide for use by classroom teachers will be provided. Participating students, teachers and parents will receive complimentary tickets to the premiere at the Harris. This program will enhance and deepen your student’s appreciation for dance and music by one of our country’s pioneers in dance.

Muntu’s Summer Dance Jamboree is a 60 minute interactive performance which brings youth, groups and parents in touch with Muntu musicians and dancers to provide an “up close and personal” shared experience of African dance and music. Children and audience members are encouraged to share what they have learned in traditional “call & response” and through expressive movement on the stage.
