       "The Sankofa Project

                                     2009 Fall Concert & Gala

MUNTU's 2009 Fall Concert

"The Sankofa Project"

"learning from our past, connecting to our future"

WHO:

Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago

WHAT:

Muntu will present its 2009 Fall Concert Series, “The Sankofa Project”, at the Gary Comer Youth Center, 7200 South Ingleside Ave (the corner of 72nd & S. South Chicago Ave, Chicago).

Sankofa is an Adinkhra symbol from the Akan people in Ghana, West Africa that means “go back to the past in order to build for the future”.  “The Sankofa Project” is Muntu’s artistic effort to exemplify the wisdom from our past to connect to our future. This concert will feature key works from Muntu’s history, such as Kakilambe and Fangama, as we bring them “back to the future”. Also included will be the World Premiere of “Legend: A Tribute to Michael Jackson”, showcasing new choreography by Amansu Eason, feature dancer for Muntu Dance Theatre and principal artist for Indiana’s South Shore Dance Alliance. Muntu will also present the company premiere of “Bride from the South” choreographed by Abdel Salaam, Executive Director of Forces of Nature.

This event is proudly sponsored by ComED, Kraft Foods, The Black United Fund of Illinois, ShoreBank, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, City Arts III. Support for “Bride from the South” provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. Co-sponsored by the Gary Comer Youth Center.
